When Dr. Carmen Burke opened a dental clinic in July 2017, she was renting a chair in a prosthetic dentist's office with an assistant. Now, just two years later, she has family holistic dentistry, a clinic that thrives in the center of Boulder. Dr. Burke’s office is located at 1840 Folsom Street and has full-time employees, including two dentists and a periodontist, who pride themselves on providing patients with high-quality holistic dental care throughout their life cycle.
Compared with traditional dentistry, holistic dental care takes a macro approach to oral health. This means using biocompatible materials as much as possible and treating the entire body as a system to determine the root cause of dental symptoms. Dr. Burke was inspired by her own experience of holistic healthcare and adopted a holistic approach.
Before moving to the United States, Dr. Burke worked in Colombia for ten years in traditional dentistry. At the time, she was taking medications for asthma, gastritis, rhinitis, and constipation. After seeing a homeopathic doctor and changing her nutrition methods, reducing processed foods and adding more organic, whole foods, she no longer needs medication. Inspired by her own healing, she joined the International Academy of Stomatology and Toxicology. Soon thereafter, she received training in SMART safe amalgam removal technology and obtained a biodental certification.
Dr. Burke explained: “The oral cavity is the gateway to the entire system network of our body, so we believe that the most important thing is to keep it in optimal health, with a balanced microbiota and minimal foreign bodies.” Holistic dentistry respects our body. The concept of being as a whole; no part, including the mouth, functions in a vacuum. "Every system of the body is interconnected, and we think it should be treated like this." At Family Holistic Dentistry, a key part of caring for the whole person is "[Ensure] we don’t put materials in the body that might cause other systemic problems. ."
In addition to using biocompatible materials, family dentistry uses technology and equipment to minimize pain. Dr. Burke proudly provides laser dentistry using Fotona Lightwalker Laser. "[It] is more comfortable for patients than standard drill bits, and is more effective in completely treating our patients’ symptoms." In addition to reducing or eliminating the need for anesthesia, Fotona Lightwalker laser can also reduce pain and swelling after treatment and shorten recovery Time, and reduce trauma to surrounding tissues. "In home holistic dentistry, we use Fotona lasers in almost all operations," said Dr. Burke. "From painless removal of tooth decay, no need for anesthesia to biostimulation of tissue to promote growth and regeneration, from painless cutting of gum tissue to biopsy, the Fotona laser is the most technologically advanced overall compatible tool on the market."
Family Holistic Dentistry also offers ozone therapy, PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), which is composed of your own white blood cells to aid healing, CBCT (cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), BPA-free composites for fillers , One-day crowns), microscopes and non-metallic crowns and implants.
Family Holistic Dentistry has an entire professional team dedicated to providing high-quality holistic dental care. In just two years, this practice has developed to include a manager, two hygienists, three assistants, a receptionist, two dentists and a periodontist. In expanding her team, Dr. Burke said she focused on finding employees who showed a positive attitude and commitment to serving patients and helping colleagues. Her team appreciates learning opportunities and workplaces with low levels of environmental toxins. "We don't use perfume, we protect ourselves when removing amalgam, [and] we have air filters [to limit exposure to] flu viruses and mold."
It is no surprise that family holistic dentistry has achieved such rapid success. They live up to their mission: treat everyone with kindness and respect, and provide the best overall dental service with cutting-edge materials and tools, as well as excellent customer service. Dr. Burke's team is committed to providing first-class dental care and firmly believes that dental health is closely related to overall health.
Nonetheless, Dr. Burke is well aware that many people avoid the dentist to avoid the pain associated with the examination chair. Her approach pays special attention to alleviating these worries, using drug-free alternatives to relax, such as Alpha-stim and Nu Calm, to help control anxiety and minimize pain. They also use The Wand, which she describes as "a computerized anesthesia painless delivery." Fotona Light Walker Laser is another technique they often use to minimize trauma to teeth and dental tissues and minimize pain. Dr. Burke said: “Because the laser uses light, you may experience the discomfort of pushing the teeth when using a conventional drill.” “Patients report feeling more comfortable with the operation and report reduced sensitivity during and after treatment. "Other pain relief strategies include ozone therapy and homeopathy.
At the same time, Family Holistic Dentistry knows that technology will never replace the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. "We are very gentle and will check our patients during the operation and give them a break when they need it," said Dr. Burke. Although technology can be solved after dental problems begin, Dr. Burke recommends that all her patients take certain steps every day for preventive care. She said that regular dental floss, Waterpik, and daily brushing are steps that everyone can and should take every day.
For current patients, it should not be surprising that family dentistry prioritizes patients. Dr. Burke's favorite job is interacting with and helping patients, and using cutting-edge technology to help complete the work efficiently and comfortably.
"I like the existing technology, which can provide my patients with a gentler experience and better treatment."
